ST Mary's Primary School in Fownhope has made a 'good improvement' since 1998, in the opinion of Ofsted inspectors.
Pupils' behaviour was 'very good', they were well motivated and keen to learn, and they work and play 'very well' together. Relationships between teachers and pupils were also good.
Inspectors found that 96 per cent of teaching was at least 'satisfactory', while over half the lessons viewed were 'good' or 'very good'.
Standards of mathematics in children leaving the school aged 11 were above the national average, while both music and art and design were 'good'.
Headteacher Colin Mutton, who joined the school shortly after their previous Ofsted inspection, gave a 'good educational direction for the work of the school' and is well supported by staff and governors.
However, there were still a few areas which inspectors found could be improved. Older pupils experienced an 'insufficient challenge' in science and art and design, while marking of work was 'inconsistent'.
