A COUNTY coalman is taking up the biggest challenge of his life when he travels to northern Tanzania to take part in the Mount Kilimanjaro Hike Away for the charity Scope.

Julian Powell, from Mordiford, will be joining 70 other people gathered from all walks of life from around the UK on June 11 for the adventure of a lifetime.

They will be trekking for five days to reach the summit of Africa's highest mountain, which despite its position on the equator is permanently covered in snow.

The team will be trekking through jungle, moorland and barren lunar landscapes to reach the summit and temperatures will range from tropical to sub-zero.

Julian, taking time out from training for the trip, said: "I am taking this challenge very seriously and I don't want to let down my sponsors. I know that I will have to be very fit so I am hill walking and running four times a week, slowly building up the distance I cover to increase my stamina."

Julian has pledged to raise £2,500 for Scope, one of the largest disability charities in the UK, which helps children and adults suffering from cerebral palsy.

"The Hereford Lions club have started my sponsorship off with a very generous donation and any other help would be gratefully appreciated," added Julian.
