A MAJOR restructuring of Xerox Europe will see 90 jobs axed at its Mitcheldean base where many people from Ross-on-Wye are employed.

The situation could worsen with a further 240 jobs in question. The losses were announced on Tuesday as part of the information technology giant's manufacturing restructuring.

It is hoped reductions at Mitcheldean will be achieved in a combination of ways.

These include the release of temporary contract staff and some voluntary redundancy, said Frans Stollman, director of Xerox manufacturing in Europe.

Meetings were being held with staff today (Thursday).

To help cut costs surplus land and buildings may also be sold at Mitcheldean where 1,500 people are currently employed.

Under the proposals it is expected that the European workforce will be reduced initially by 230, cutting costs by $200 million per year.
