Wantage Town 4 Pegasus Juniors 3

A WEAKENED Pegasus side netted three goals during a spirited fight-back in the final 20 minutes of their Cherry Red Records Hellenic League Premier Division fixture, but were unable to salvage a point.

Wantage took the lead after 19 minutes when Ben Speiro gained possession on the left, cut inside and let fly from 30 yards.

They could have extended the lead but Frank Dorian missed an easy chance. In a couple of rare Pegasus attacks Mark Davis set up Ben Williams but his effort struck a post and then Darren Jones had a shot saved.

As conditions deteriorated the home team gained the upper hand in the early stages of the second half. Speiro netted his second goal in the 53rd minute after Neil Hotchkiss lost possession in midfield. When Dorian controversially netted the third from a free-kick the contest looked over.

But Pegasus rallied with Davis in good form. After setting up Jones, who shot wide from 10 yards, he had better luck when Williams capitalised on a similar move to fire home his first league goal.

Pegasus were rocked when Mike Burke restored Wantage's three-goal advantage with a 25-yard drive. Back they came and Chris Aspey reduced the arrears when he headed home a Laurence Helme free-kick.

Hotchkiss then created an opening but was brought down by the keeper, who was sent off, and Davis gratefully slotted home the penalty.
