ONE-time Hereford United hero Steve Devine has been reflecting on his fond memories during his time at Edgar Street, writes Andy Holmes.

Devine played 272 league games for Hereford from 1986-93 before continuing his career in non-league circles and now plays part time at Gresley Rovers while working at Derby County as a sports therapist.

Although he left seven years ago, Edgar Street will always have a place in his heart.

"Obviously we had a couple of good cup runs, the game against Manchester United comes to mind. It was a good club and they were good to me and I enjoyed my time there," he said. "I've still got a house in Leominster so I've still got my connections with the people, I've very fond memories".

Most players leave Hereford and fade into obscurity but Devine has flourished in the non-league scene and has taken steps towards career enhancement.

"When I first left Hereford I went to Corby and then I had three years at Hednesford with the Cup run and the Middlesbrough game. Then I went to Gresley the year they won promotion and then I went back to Hednesford.

"I enjoyed my time and whilst I was playing part-time I went to university and got myself a proper job!"

Steve played most of his games in defence at Hereford but has reverted to the role that started his career.

"Before I went to Hereford I played midfield and since I left I've played a lot of games in midfield. I've always enjoyed playing there, it just happened that I could do a job at the back and I was happy just to play."

Steve was known to all at Edgar Street as "Woody" and that nickname will remain with him.

"It's making a revival again after a few years. One or two of the lads at Derby knew me at Hereford so they're calling me it."
