CAMEO CLUB -- Knighton Methodist Church's Cameo Club met at the Victoria Road Church and Mrs Sue Bywater welcomed everyone to the meeting. Members were served coffee and biscuits on arrival, and then sang hymns, with Mrs Joan Beattie accompanying on the piano. A member read a prayer.

Mrs A Stocker spoke of her work as a nurse, explaining the profession, the training involved and her career as a staff nurse in big hospitals. Although the work was hard she enjoyed her many years employment in nursing. The morning finished with coffee, a ploughman's lunch, and fruit pie with cream, all prepared by Mrs May Hill, Mrs Heather Mann and Mrs Beattie.

ROTARY CLUB-- Knighton and District Rotary Club held a balloon race on the showfield at Knighton Show and Carnival on August 25. Winner of the £50 prize for the furthest balloon was Mrs Helen Baker, of Garth Lane, Knighton. Her balloon was found by Mr J A Walker, of Ebor Way, Bank Top, Oswaldkirk, North Yorkshire, who received a £10 prize for returning the ticket of the winning balloon.

BROKEN PAVING SLABS -- Knighton Town Council has supported two motions from Councillor Christine Branford, the first calling for the pavement to be repaired in Market Street, and the second for the repair of a broken stone outside 'The Flowerbox' in Broad Street, though there was an initial dispute as to whether the first mentioned damage was in Plough Road or Market Street.

Councillor Ken Harris said he would bring the matters up with appropriate department of Powys County Council.

MISSING NUMBER SIGN -- Councillor Christine Branford told members of Knighton Town Council that the number sign for houses 32-42 at Radnor Drive had been missing for some time, and this made it difficult for visitors to the area to find their way around.

Councillor Ken Harris said that he would seek to get a replacement sign installed. "I've had it done it other places," he said referring to past successes in getting missing and damaged signs replaced.

FLOOD ALLEVIATION -- Knighton Town Councillors expressed their concern that neither Powys County Council nor Shropshire County Council had funds available for a flood alleviation scheme in Mill Green. They will pursue the matter with the members of parliament for Ludlow and Brecon and Radnor.

Councillor Trevor Johnson expressed concern at the cost to ratepayers of two officers of Powys County Council attending the meeting, but Councillor Ken Harris replied that Councillor Johnson's criticism was quite unfair: "We asked them to come," he said, "and they had other business in the area."

Mill Green is very close to the border between Powys and Shropshire, which follows the line of the River Teme in 1535 when Radnorshire was first established as a county, and not the present line. All the houses except one are in Powys.

SUPPORT FOR RAMBLERS -- On a majority decision members of Knighton Town Council agreed to affiliate to the Ramblers Association at a cost of £20.

"Walkers come into the town, park their cars, eat their packed lunches but spend no money," said Councillor Jan Harris. Councillor Bernard Hodnett was also opposed, but Councillor Johnson said that walkers did benefit the town's economy and the Council should join the Ramblers Association. Councillor Johnson's view prevailed.

TREE FOR CHOP -- Knighton Town Council gave its support to a planning application to remove a former Christmas tree at 4 Church Road, Knighton.

NEW FINGERPOSTS? -- Knighton Town Council is looking at the cost implications of adding extra signs to the millennial finger posts to show the way to Sir Francis Edward's Centre on the site of The Cottage in Bridge Street.

The council responded to a letter requesting signage from Radnorshire Age Concern. The letter stressed the increased use the Centre was receiving.

LACK OF SUPPORT -- Councillor Trevor Johnson expressed his deep concern at Knighton Town Council's failure to support a request from Abbey Cwmhir Community Council asking that Powys County Council keeps the annual increase in rates to below the level of inflation. "Knighton was the only community council that did not support Abbey Cwmhir," said Councillor Johnson. "We should hang our heads in shame."

MORE INFORMATION NEEDED -- Knighton Town Council asked for more information on a planning and change of use application to convert a fish and chip restaurant in Castle Road into two dwellings.

Members were unsure whether or not the premises were in the town's core retail area.
