CRICKET CLUB -- Almeley Cricket Club held its annual team dinner at The Bells Inn, Almeley, on Saturday, October 20. In a season foreshortened by considerations to restrict foot and mouth disease, just nine league games were played, with the club finishing fourth in the Hereford Times League Division Three. Presentations were made for Batsman of the Year to Nick Frost, best bowling performance to Andy Ball, and the team's Player of the Year, Mark Wozencroft. The single wicket competition was won by club captain Darren Duggan. In 2002 the club celebrates 50 years since its establishment in 1952, when its first game was played against Titley. The village green remains the venue for all home games, and Almeley continues this tradition as one of the few Herefordshire cricket sides truly playing as a village green team. The club operates a 100 Club, which is of major significance in supplying annual funding. October's monthly draw was held and the winners were: 1st prize - Mrs C Richards, Cardiff, £25 and 2nd prize - Mr C Evans, Eardisley £15. The November draw also took place, with the winners being Mr G England, Swansea £25 and Mr W Duggan, Kington £15. The club will also be holding a further fund-raising event when Christmas Bingo will be held at 8pm on December 12 at Almeley Village Hall, to which all are welcome to attend.
VILLAGE HALL -- Due to unforeseen circumstances, it was with regret that the Village Hall Committee had to cancel the Luncheon due to be held in the Hall on Sunday, October 28.
WHIST DRIVE -- As the winter approaches, the number of players at the fortnightly whist drives has increased. Mario Battenti has returned as MC and he presented prizes to Mrs M Drew, Mrs B Lloyd, Mrs D Woody, Mrs B Catley, Mrs K Jenkins and Mrs E Hardinge. The next whist drive is on Tuesday, November 6 at 7.45pm.
