THE Broomy Hill water treatment works in Hereford is undergoing a multi-million pound upgrade.

The improvements are being carried out for Welsh Water to ensure the works provide high-quality drinking water to people living in the area.

Broken into two phases, the first will involve demolition work and contractors Cliff Penny have been involved in securing the necessary planning permission. Welsh Water has told local residents about the scheme and how it will affect them.

The second phase is still in early planning but the whole programme is due for completion by September 2003, with most work done next year.

Broomy Hill has been the home of the Hereford water works since 1856.

The existing works have been in use since 1977 and pumps treated water to service reservoirs to the north and the south of the city.

The latest improvements by Welsh Water follow a summer of problems with the quality of drinking water in the area.
