Work could begin next month on Ledbury's new toilet block near the entrance to Bye Street car park.

The town council had expressed its concern that the building would be clipped by lorries delivering to the rear of Homend businesses.

But Colin Birks, Herefordshire Council's property services manager, said the toilets would be set right back and that he was happy with the risk assessment. Footpath access to the site will also be improved.

The planning application, which has just been submitted, is for a "modern anti-vandal design", featuring extensive use of stainless steel. There will be a unisex cubicle for disabled people, plus separate cubicles for male and female.

Mr Birks said the toilets, which will replace the block demolished to make way for the new Community Hospital, could be ready at the end of March.
