The Brown Owl of 1st Ledbury Brownies, Caroline Bates, has just been awarded a bachelor of science degree in equine science from the University of the West of England.

Miss Bates, a former pupil at John Masefield High School, was presented with her certificate at a graduation ceremony in Gloucester Cathedral last week.

Her father, former Ledbury ambulance driver Steve Bates, said: "We're very proud of her. She's the first in our family to get a degree."

Miss Bates, aged 21, is particular interested in a career dedicated to writing about horses, because of her love for horses and her academic and practical knowledge of them.

Aside from her work with the Brownies, much of her time is currently dedicated to producing her own magazine, The Dun Thing, which is a magazine for subscribers who are particularly interested in dun horses.

Miss Bates, who is herself the owner of a dun horse, currently has around 100 subscribers.
