ST MARY'S Church, Ross-on-Wye, is the venue for a performance of Brahms' masterpiece Ein Deutches Requiem on Saturday, November 17 at 7.30pm.

Ross-On-Wye Choral Society's Autumn concert features this moving and melodic work sung in the original German, accompanied by the Regency Sinfonia, leader Ian Davidson, under the baton of Ian Fox, musical director of the Choral Society. Solo artistes Jane Webster, soprano, and Christopher Booth-Jones, baritone, complete the line-up.

Jane was the English representative at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1991 while Christopher's operatic career has included ENO and radio broadcasts for the BBC and in Europe.

The work is not a requiem in the traditional musical sense of a mass for the dead. The text is drawn from the Lutheran translation of the Bible and Apocrypha and was intended by the composer to be more a consolation for the living. Uplifting majesty and great tenderness can be heard in its seven movements.

Tickets are available on 01989 563059, Ross Tourist Information Centre and The Outback in Hereford.

If you are interested in joining the Choral Society then they are keen to recruit new members, particularly male voices. Contact 01989 768953 for more details.
