FAIR -- The Macmillan Cancer Relief Christmas fair will be held in Knighton Church Hall on Saturday, November 17, at 3pm. There will be all the usual stalls, cakes and produce, and Father Christmas will come with presents for the small children during the afternoon.

CARDBOARD BANK -- Knighton Town Clerk Elizabeth Patterson told the town council that a cardboard bank would be delivered to the Recycling Centre in the Bowling Green lane carpark in the next 7 to 14 days.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING -- The annual general meeting of Knighton Show and Carnival Committee will be on Thursday, November 15 at 8pm at the RAFA Club, High Street, Knighton. New ideas and committee members are always most welcome. The 2002 Show and Carnival will be on Saturday, August 31.

ECUMENICAL SERVICE -- The annual 'songs of praise' service organized by Churches Together in Knighton and District will be on Sunday, November 18 at 6.30pm at Saint Michael's Church, Beguildy. The Churches Together Choir will sing at the switching on of Knighton's Christmas lights on Saturday, December 1.

KNIGHTON GROUP OF PARISHES -- Services this Sunday in the Knighton Group of Parishes this Sunday (11th November) are: 9.30am Eucharist at Knighton (Reverend Andrew Pearce); 10.00am Eucharist at Whitton (Reverend Donald Green); 10.00am Remembrance Service at Norton (Mr John Stocker); 10.30am Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Brookside Square followed by Service of Remembrance at Saint Edward's Church.

CATHOLIC CHURCH -- Knighton and Presteigne Catholic Church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar in Knighton Church Hall this Saturday (10th November) at 2.00pm.

BAPTIST CHURCH -- Knighton Baptist Church will have no service this Sunday as members will take part in the ecumenical Service of Remembrance at Knighton Church in Wales.

BROOKSIDE SQUARE -- Knighton Town Council has given permission to the Extravaganza Committee to use Brookside Square on the night of the Extravaganza, Thursday, December 13.

INCREASED SUBSCRIPTION -- Knighton Town Council has agreed to pay an increased subscription to Powys Association of Town and Community Councils. The Powys Association is a member of the National Association of Local Councils, which has incurred considerable costs in producing a corporate plan for the development of services to member councils.

COST OF MARKET STALLS -- Members of Knighton Town Council expressed concern at the decline of the town's Thursday market in the Norton Arms Carpark. Councillor Jan Harris felt that the fees were too high. The matter was referred to the business committee.

EXTRAVAGANZA -- Knighton's Extravaganza 2001 organising committee is now well ahead with plans for the big event on Thursday, December 13. 'Gazebo World' is one of this year's new ventures. Charities and good causes are invited, free of charge, to set up their garden gazebos and lanterns on Brookside Square and sell their festive wares on the evening of the Extravaganza. Three will be no charge to bona fide charities and voluntary local organizations. The Committee is accepting bookings for pitches at the Crafts and Collectibles Fair, which will once again take place at the Knighton Hotel, and there still a few vacant places for street vendors along Broad Street and at the Clock Tower during the evening. The winning entry gets a £20 cash prize, generously donated by HSBC Bank, and the Ray Scotford Memorial Cup. Judging will take place on the evening of Friday, November 30, and the winner will be announced at the grand switch on of the Christmas lights on Saturday, December 1.

KNIGHTON WEDNESDAY CLUB -- The annual general meeting of Knighton and District Wednesday Club will take place at the Social Room, Saint Edward's Close, on Thursday, November 15 at 10.30am.Winners in the raffle at a meeting of the Wednesday Club in the Saint Edward's Close Community Room were Mrs Davies, Mrs Moss, Mrs Barrett, Miss Pugh, Mr Price, Mrs Upton, Mrs Payne and Mrs Conway. Mrs N. Barrett and Mrs E. Conway were helpers, and Mrs Conway was caller for bingo.

SAINT EDWARD'S CHURCH -- The Rev. Andrew Pearce, priest in charge of the Knighton group of parishes, celebrated Eucharist at Saint Edward's Church last Sunday in honour of Saints Simon and Jude. Before the service, Father Pearce explained that these were the two apostles about which the least was known, and Jude had come to be recognised as the patron saint of lost causes. Later in the morning, Jim Muggleton took the service of Morning Prayer. The Rev. Donald Green read the first lesson, and Audrey Green the second. Mr Green also led the intercessions. In his sermon Mr Muggleton warned Christians not to accept the idea, which pervaded modern thinking, that truth was relative, and to be confident in proclaiming the faith. He was concerned that the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, was introducing a bill which would make it illegal to incite religious hatred, and that this might be used against those asserting the Christian faith. "We must let political correctness steer us away from the truth in Christ," said Mr Muggleton. Cecil Rudge was organist, and Hilary Howcroft directed the choir which led the singing of the traditional canticles of Morning Prayer.

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE -- Knighton's Service of Remembrance will be on Sunday, November 11 at 11am at Saint Edward's Church, and will be preceded by a short service and laying of wreaths on the War Memorial in Brookside Square. The Mayor of Knighton, Councillor Roger Bright, will represent the community of Knighton at both services.

HARVEST SUPPER --Saint Edward's Harvest Supper raised over £240 for the ministry of the church. Those attending had a choice of two meals, a ham salad or beef stew, and enjoyed a singalong with Jenny Watts of Clun. Father Andrew Pearce said grace, and Cecil Rudge displayed his talent as an auctioneer at the sale of harvest produce. In the raffle, Hilary Howcroft won a bottle of sherry, Councillor Ken Harris a box of chocolates and Lilian Bright a basket of organic vegetables. Father Andrew thanked those who had prepared the meal and helped with the organisation and running of the event.

KNIGHTON BOWLING CLUB --The lady members of Knighton Bowling Club held a whist drive at the clubhouse in Church Road on Thursday, October 25. Shirley Moorhouse was master of ceremonies. Winners were ladies: Mrs C Bright, Mrs M Brown, Mrs J Williams; and gentlemen: Mrs M Shepherd, Miss E Moorhouse and Mr T Pugh. Mrs O Jones and Rose Lynell took the consolation prizes. Draw prizes were won by: Mrs C Price, Mrs I Meeson and Miss M Roberts. Miss M Roberts presented the prizes. There were six tables. The next whist drive is on Thursday, November 8 at 7.30pm at the clubhouse.

CATHOLIC CHURCH -- Knighton and Presteigne Catholic Church will hold its annual Christmas Fair in Knighton Church Hall on Saturday, November 10 at 2pm. Please note the earlier time of starting.

CONCERT -- The Inn Ringers will be in concert on Saturday, November 17 at 7.30pm in Knighton Church Hall The team of twelve ringers with 116 handbells will perform a varied repertoire from the classical to modern pops by way of rag-time.
