COUNCIL OF CHURCHES -- The chairman, the Rev. James Butterworth, presided at a recent meeting, which was commenced by prayer by the Rev. Rickard. There were many events to be discussed which had been held and those to be held in the future. It was reported that the Nia Concert held at the Memorial Hall was a great success and the amount collected for the missionary work undertaken by her was £500. The Rev. Rickard reported that the August Holiday Club held in the village had been a great success, more than 50 children attended. Arrangements were made for the special meeting 'Advent Service' on December 2. Mr Hemson has already started choir rehearsals for this event. The Christmas places and times will be distributed by the clergy giving the information and the Abbot of Belmont has been invited to preach at the service to be held on January 20 and two speakers have been invited to speak at the Lent services and others may be asked to speak also. The secretary explained that the new pack is being made up and would be distributed shortly, and the interested people would be able to purchase one for £1. Mr Broadbent, the treasurer, presented the balance sheet, Mrs James raised the issue of the low attendance to the Common Liturgy of the World meetings, this matter was however considered well worth while. The Rev. Rickard raised the possibility of improving links with eastern Europe as a result of the Nia Concert. The meeting closed with a prayer.
