HIGHWAYS -- The mountain parish of Brilley has been given responsibility for the maintenance of its minor highways, following its application to operate a pilot scheme, made to the Herefordshire Council. It will now receive a grant of about £350 per month to fund the scheme, which will result in the appointment of a lengthsman and an administrator - two posts, which are currently being advertised by Brilley Parish Council. The lengthsman, or roadman as an older generation knew him, was once a familiar figure in the countryside, and he and his fellows took a great pride in their neatly trimmed verges and well-maintained roadside ditches. As well as the usual clerical tasks, the administrator will also be responsible for dealing with feedback from the parishioners.
