This year's Round Table firework display was a record breaker as over 1,000 people packed into Ledbury Park on one of the warmest bonfire nights remembered in Ledbury.

A record total of £3,200 was taken on the gate - the highest ever known during the 43 years since the Ledbury Round Table first started organising the fundraising display.

A huge bonfire lit the evening sky and the company responsible for the visual entertainment, Event Horizons, brought a spectacular laser display to Ledbury for the first time ever.

Delighted Round Table chairman, Neil Morris, said: "It was excellent, and the weather was extremely warm for this time of year. It was one of the biggest and best bonfires we've ever had, and I think the response of the people who came was pretty positive."

After expenses are covered, the Round Table hopes to give around £1,800 to its chosen charity which, this year, is the Hereford Special Care Baby Unit.

That is almost double the Round Table's aimed-for target of £1,000.

This unit is a cause dear to Mr Morris because, two years ago, his daughter Charlotte was born prematurely and spent her first three months of life there.

Sponsorship from local businesses came to £700 this year.

The total charity pot of £1,800 fell just short of the previous record but in that year the sponsorship contributions were £1,200.

Round Table members are now hoping that despite the recent death of landowner Edward Biddulph, they will still be allowed to use Ledbury Park for future bonfires and maintain the tradition.

Mr Morris said: "We are keeping our fingers crossed, but as yet we are uncertain as to what will happen.

"We have been very pleased with the generosity of Mr Biddulph over the years, and we are hoping that his beneficiaries will continue to support the event."
