STOKE Lacy residents are appealing to Herefordshire Council for a lower speed limit to be introduced in their village.

Although traffic calming measures were put in place on the A465 Bromyard to Hereford road at Stoke Lacy to highlight the 40mph speed limit earlier this year, the parish council feels traffic is still going too fast and is fighting for 30mph restrictions.

Carole Surman, clerk to Stoke Lacy Parish Council, said: "Herefordshire Council are doing a survey of traffic speeding and the number of accidents. However, they have put the sensor across the road opposite the church where it is narrow and has a sharp bend, so traffic has to slow to go round the bend. The problem is at the Bromyard end, just past the village hall.

"The police say that we perceive that it's going too fast but they really are going too fast, especially motorbikes. We have had one fatality in past 10 years but a lot of accidents where the cars come off the road aren't recorded.

"Traffic whizzes down the hill and I have lost count of the number of cars who lose it and end up in the ditch. You take your life in your hands every time you try and come out of your house onto the road," she added.

Stoke Lacy Parish Council will discuss the issue at its next meeting on November 13.
