DEVELOPING the quality of its raw material - the cider apple - is one of the key objectives of the National Association of Cider Makers, whose members last autumn pressed a record 140,000 tonnes of fruit.
To help growers achieve good orchard practice, the association, in partnership with ADAS, is publishing a new book entitled Growing Cider Apples which tells just about everything they need to know about growing cider fruit - from selecting the site to harvesting the crop.
Although it does not set out to be a definitive manual, it offers sound and helpful advice and guidelines.
Written by two leading experts, Liz Copas, field officer of the association, and Roger Umpelby, retired chief entomologist at ADAS, the book will be sent free to contract growers. Copies are available at £12.50 from George Thomas at Bulmers, Plough Lane, Hereford, with cheques payable to NACM.
