PHIL Green set a new amateur course record of 71 at the Hereford Municipal course but this was not quite good enough to win the combined Public Courses qualifying competition and June stableford.

His 41 points gained him a place in the regional final of the Public Courses Championship at Bristol but he had to give way to his club chairman and secretary Harry Magee who won the competition with an impressive 45 points.

n Sapey assistant professional Adam Gardener is hoping for a good finish in the PGA Assistants' Championship qualifier at St Thomas's Priory, Lichfield, tomorrow.

Gardener has been assistant to Chris Knowles for three years and is working for his PGA diploma. He will be aiming for a top 18 finish to guarantee him a start in the 72-hole PGA Assistants' Championship, to be played over the St Anne's Old Links, Blackpool.

Host club pairing Anita and Derek Perkins fired 40 stableford points to win the Mixed Open competition.

They finished a point clear of Vicki and Paul Thomas (Kidderminster), with another home club pairing, Ann and Mervyn Billingham, claiming third spot with 38 points.

n Burghill Valley youngsters Jon Carter, Ben Carter, Elliot Shaw and Jonathan Devereux, appropriately called 'The Young Ones', used their 50 shots well to win the Flag part of the combined Jubilee Flag and Texas Scramble competition when they holed out on the 15th with their 50th shot.

The mixed team had a comfortable 5-1 win over visiting Ross-on-Wye, winning four and halving two of the six matches.

In spite of being restricted to irons and having their handicaps reduced by a quarter, the 'Lads' beat the 'Lasses' comfortably in a challenge match. However, they did play off the red blocks, with the opposition sent back to play off the whites.

n Rob Metcalfe and David Bradley made light of the wet and windy conditions at Bradnor Hill to win Kington's Famous Grouse Foursomes qualifying event with a nett 69, two shots clear of John Moses and Martin Bufton, with Nick Layton and Mike Powell a further two shots adrift in third place.

John Priday will probably ditch most of his clubs after carding a gross 73 and 41 stableford points to win the Jubilee 'Three clubs and a putter' competition.

n Persistent rain left the Herefordshire GC course playing long for the large Jubilee Bank Holiday Open Mixed Foursomes field, a factor which was reflected in the scoring.

Visitors Colin and Kathy Priest (Penn) just got the better of home club pairing Terry and Clare Harding to win on a card countback, with Ken and Viv Jury relegated to third spot after all three couples had posted 35 stableford points.

n Dan Jarman recorded the best gross score in Leominster's monthly medal with 71.
