HEREFORDSHIRE county bowlers open their Middleton Cup campaign this Saturday after their last trial match ended in a 12-shot defeat to Wiltshire with only two rinks won.
The county meet Glouce-stershire at Eastnor and will need a big improvement on the 120-108 defeat to Wiltshire at Kingsland last Saturday.
Brinley Powell's rink all played well to win 28-11, while the other successful skip was Clive Benson with a 24-22 win.
The heaviest defeat was incurred by skip Phil Williams who, after being one shot down at 13 ends, did not score again and crashed 22-9. Mike Ricketts led 17-9 after 17 ends but collapsed to a 21-17 defeat, while Phil Middleton lost 23-13.
Dave Holloway's rink fought from being 16-6 down after 13 ends to lead in the final end. But a fine takeout by the Wiltshire skip left them 21-17 losers.
Herefordshire meet Somerset in a Top Rink match at Eastnor on Sunday.
Herefordshire: John Wear, David Holloway, Barry Payne, Roger Barnes (skip).
