A Hereford student aims to bring a little 'sunshine' into the lives of abandoned babies in Egypt by trekking along the Nile in November.

After reading of journalist Jen Green's visit to the Sunshine International Project in Luxor, 21-year-old Naomi Coleman and her boyfriend, Lee, decided on a plan of action.

The pair will take part in the trek in the hope of raising cash to help build a home and a school for 'Sunshine's' abandoned babies.

Naomi, who is studying performance arts at Herefordshire College of Art & Design, is no stranger to fund-raising or long distance hiking.

Her previous efforts have provided her with a Nepalese adventure that took her across Helambu, an area farmed by Sherpas and Buddhist monks.

Along with the 49 others, Naomi managed to raise £120,000 to help educate under privileged children.

When quizzed on why she does it, she said: "I am a Christian and the prospect of working together with Islamics to save little children from possible death is vital, particularly when they are always fighting each other."

Now Naomi and Lee are busy organising events to raise the £2,500 personal total needed to help fund the trip.

Anyone who wishes to sponsor Naomi and Lee can contact them on 0775 9092821 and information on Sunshine is available on www.sunshine-international.org or call Eve Lawton on 01270 255110.

Meanwhile, The Hereford Times article featuring the Sunshine Home for Abandoned babies caught the attention of another group of individuals.

Contact Course students at Herefordshire College of Art and Design saw the article during their weekly news project and wanted to help.

The students held a sponsored swim and a sports challenge that raised £400, and they decided to give £200 to the project.

The remainder of the money will go towards the building of a special school in Goa.
