A CONTROVERSIAL plan to replace a city social club with 19 two-bedroom flats has been given the go-ahead.
Planning permission was granted to demolish the Woodpecker Club in Whitecross and build the flats along with 12 garages, and a number of parking spaces.
The site at the junction of Whitecross Road and Ryelands Street will consist of a mixture of rendered and red brick buildings.
Concerns were raised over the increasing traffic problem in the area and Councillor David Short even referred to the roads as a 'death trap'. A petition with 41 signatures was also received from local residents.
He disagreed with the plan on two counts, firstly because of the intensification of the site and secondly, he believed it would change the nature of the area. However, Councillor Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes said the proposal fitted the need for housing and would serve the area very well.
