THE Steam Fair at Eastnor Castle on Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday proved to be a great hit with the public, attracting more than 5,000 visitors across the two days.

Star of the show was the steam traction engine Atlas, restored to working order by castle owner James Hervey-Bathurst and TV steeplejack and machinery enthusiast Fred Dibnah.

The engine, driven by Mr Dibnah, towed trailer-loads of enthusiastic youngsters out of the castle grounds and into surrounding roads.

Many other steam engines and vehicles of all sorts were on display to the delight of young and old alike.

Other attractions included displays by Sean the sheep-shearer from Australia, woodland walks, fly fishing, archery and clay pigeon shooting.

There was even a ferret racing event, which was extremely popular and raised £53 for breast cancer research.

Castle spokesman Ben Leeke said: "We were quite surprised and pleased at how popular the event was, considering all the Jubilee events it was up against, including the classical concert in Worcester and all the things on TV."
