Hereford and District pupils excelled at the Herefordshire and Worc-estershire County Athle-tics Championships.

Senior sprinters and jumpers dominated as Sarah Fletcher and Richard Reynolds (both Cathedral) won the sprint double with Shelley Badham (Sixth Form College) taking both the long jump and triple jump.

Inter boy Greg Winfield (Bishop's) easily won both the 400m (52.2 sec) and the long jump (6m31), as did Steve Olesky (Bishop's) in the 3000m (9 min 43 sec). John Kyrle's middle distance runners Tom Phillips (800m in 2 min 10 sec) and Ralph Wilson (1500m in 4 min 42 sec) were second in their respective events.

Vanessa Ball (John Kyrle) just clinched victory in the inter girls' 300m (46.8 sec) whilst Rhianon Evans (Bishop's) was denied victory on countback in the high jump (1m 48in).

Cathedral's James Lewis ran strongly for second in the 200m (25.6 sec), as did Bishop's Alan Spencer in the 800m (2 min 15.6 sec) and James Best (Cath-edral) when finishing third in the 1500m (4 min 57 sec).

Ashley Phillips (Cath-edral) leapt to second place in the high jump, whilst John Au (White-cross) leapt to third in the long jump (5m 10). Ashley followed this performance with victory in the Mason Trophy, an inter-counties event with an English Schools qualifying height of 1m 75cm.

At the Minors' County Championships, held for year seven and eight pupils, several youngsters excelled.

The performance of the day came from Aylestone's distance runners. J Upcott led from gun to tape to win the 1500m in 5 min 3 sec with team mate S Reid a close sixth in 5 min 10 sec.

Srinters recorded a trio of third slots. Amy Ellis (100m), Freddie Anthony (200m), both Cathedral, and Don Reilly (Bishop's) all had to work hard for their respective bronze medals.

Sarah Connop (Cath-edral) was denied victory in the discus by a mere eight centimetres when throwing a superb 19m 52cm whilst S Quinn (Aylestone) was a comfortable third in the girls' javelin (18m 48s). S Jones (Whitecross) ran strongly to take second slot in the 400m (62.65sec) whilst L Herbert also finished second in the boys' shot with a putt of 9m 68cm.
