A FIRE engine called out to a chemical fire at Whitney-on-Wye and a lorry driving in the opposite direction were in collision, writes HEATH ASTON.

The crash occurred on the A438 last Friday afternoon (June 21) as the engine was en route to an incident which involved a truck whose toxic load had caught fire.

The lorry driver was taken by ambulance to Hereford General Hospital suffering shock and whiplash.

The fire crew was able to continue to the junction of the Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge where Police closed all roads in the area. Fire fighters went to work with foam in special chemical-resistant suits.

The fire was contained but traffic in the area was affected until late into Friday afternoon as authorities dealt with the hazardous run-off near the River Wye.

The Environment Agency was called in to oversee the mop up.

Police have appealed to the female driver of a red car in the vicinity to come forward and help their enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Chris Fry on 01432 276422.
