A SPOT of egg throwing between husbands and wives was among the attractions at Bishops Frome's annual church fete last Saturday.

Although poor weather initially failed to draw the crowds at the beginning of the afternoon, by the end of the day enough people had attended to raise £1,700 for St Mary's Church funds.

Organiser Sue Cooper said: "It was a happy occasion and things went well. It was a bit worrying because of the rain but once it stopped it gradually got better throughout the afternoon. The egg throwing at the end was quite a lot of fun."

Other activities included a painting competition, racing games, splat the rat and a draw which raised more than £400. Youngster's also enjoyed watching animal balloons being made by magician Uncle Jim.

Because of the demands for maintenance costs for the local church, Mrs Cooper said that another event would be planned for later in the year.

She said: "We've really got to do a lot of fundraising for the church. We need quite a lot of money."
