THE legendary Tom Spring once again took centre stage at the Green Man Inn when a book about the bare-knuckle boxing champion was launched at the Fownhope pub.

The life story of 'The All England Champion' has been carefully compiled by Hoarwithy author Jon Hurley, who was accompanied by Frank Keating at the publication's launch.

Having assembled reams of information on the county's most notable fighter, the boxing enthusiast took just 12 months to put the book together.

Mr Hurley explained that Tom Spring was far more than a 19th century pugilist.

"The Georgian period was a fairly brutal one, but Tom Spring was a modest and polite gentleman who behaved both gracefully and elegantly."

He added that the book incorporates much more than sport, and contains a great deal of local history.

"It is not your usual bloodthirsty boxing account. There is plenty of local colour explaining Tom's journeys around the county stretching from his birth place in Rudgend, to the Booth Hall, which he managed, in Hereford city centre."
