MADAM, Okay, I will agree that parts of Hereford are an eyesore and need regeneration. The problem is that a lot of the eyesores are a result of the last 'regeneration'.

I have an awful feeling the 'modernists' will triumph yet again and we will be confronted by coloured cubes of either glass, concrete or plastic.

The most beautiful building in Hereford City is the Town Hall, a very traditional stone building. It would cost an absolute fortune to build anything on that scale, in that architecture these days. But to redesign the city centre, Castle Green or cattle market with pure cost as an over-riding factor will result in an absolute disaster.

To paraphrase the Prince of Wales, we will finish up with a plethora of 'monstrous carbuncles on the face of an old friend'.

He was also ridiculed by the modernists as being out of touch and knowing nothing about modern architecture. Which may be true, but he knows what he likes and that, surely, is what it is all about?

The modernisers will, yet again, try to impose their will on the rest of us and the planning track record of this council indicates they will succeed.

I do not propose to keep us in the last century, but the status quo would be preferable to some of the hideous proposals being aired by some of the more avantgarde promoters.

If we are going 'regenerate' the City of Hereford, please let us retain a sense of proportion and a sense of our history.

BOB WALTERS,

The Folly, Shenmore, Madley.
