Madam, In answer to K Jenkins' question "Has Hereford lost pride in itself?" I fear the answer is yes.
I have lived here for nearly 20 years and before that in several other towns and cities in England and regularly visit them. Hereford does not compare well but should do given some of its advantages.
As a small cathedral city set amid beautiful countryside and many miles away from any motorway it should be relatively unspoilt and protected from the worst ravages of modern urban life. The success of tourism here depends on the right image. Sadly, parts of the city do look tatty and neglected and litter is becoming a big problem.
Thankfully, we have benefited from the philanthropic vision of Albert Heijn and the Left-Bank and the success of the Courtyard Theatre. They are both inspired and aspirational and should set the standard for future projects.
Litter is an inevitable result of our throwaway, selfish consumer society and local councils just have to accept they must work more efficiently to cope with this sad fact of human irresponsibility. Civic pride will be nurtured by example and by the setting of high standards.
