A TEENAGER who performs on the world stage has become the first motor sports competitor to receive the Ted Woodriffe Award in the 10-year history of The Hereford Times scheme.

Chaz Davies' startling progress in top motorcycle racing earned him the accolade at a presentation held in conjunction with Herefordshire Sports Council's evening.

The award was first introduced by The Hereford Times on the retirement of long-standing sports editor, the late Ted Woodriffe, to be given to a promising young sports person to further their ambitions.

Chaz, who celebrated his 16th birthday on Monday, received a trophy and a bursary to mark his achievements in 2002 when he was the youngest-ever grand prix entrant in the 125cc World Championship after becoming the youngest-ever winner of a British Championship race the previous year.

The John Beddoes High School pupil from Kinsham, who has to combine his studies with world travel, had a best finish last year off 11th in the Portuguese Grand Prix and was 28th in the final merit table while competing against many more experienced riders.

He made such an impact that this year he has moved up to compete in the 250cc World Championship after signing for the Aprilia Germany race team. The opening round takes place in Japan in April.
