A STALWART of the Herefordshire Ornithological Club for more than three decades has died aged 62.

Chris Mead, the driving force behind ringing birds and the study of migrations, died on January 16 after a lengthy illness.

An obituary in the club's February newsletter said Mr Mead was a 'larger than life man' and 'when he climbed a ladder to a nest box, it would sometimes sink into the ground to the extent that it took some heaving out again!'

"He had large strong hands, but these were capable of amazingly dextrous and delicate work, especially with tiny chicks which he handled with a kind of loving panache," said the tribute.

Mr Mead was also honoured with the RSPB Medal, the BTO's Bernard Tucker Medal and the Union Medal of the British Ornithologists' Union
