Madam, Starlings notwithstanding, I think the leylandii should be cut down - I think all leylandii should be cut down.
Not only do they grow very quickly up to 100 ft and cause a nuisance, but they exude a horrible nauseating pong.
There are many more attractive conifers (not all are fir trees as you imply) to choose from. At least pines smell nice.
