MADAM, Well done Herefordshire Council for finally seeing the light!

Because that's exactly what they've let in on Castle Green.

I walk along Castle Green four times a day and what a difference it makes having the riverside bank cleared of undergrowth. You can actually see the river again! During the past few sunny days, the light reflected off the river has been beautiful.

I was so pleased I went to have a look from Bishop's Meadow and, from there, Castle Green is beginning to look like a castle bailey again. Those fortifications were built by our mediaeval ancestors as protection for the people of the city. For 700 years the banks were kept clear of any trees to provide for a good view along the River Wye. Those trees were planted in the 1970s and the only thing they had managed to do is obscure the view!

Don't stop there! Take out all the trees and the hedge too (even though it's a beauty) - a medieval castle bailey still intact is something to be proud of!
