The footballers of Newent's Picklenash Junior School are so good, the final of a countywide competition on Saturday was a clash between the A team and the B team.

The school has managed to win one of the most prestigious six- a-side trophies in Gloucestershire for a total of three years out of four.

Last weekend, in the final at the Whitecross Leisure Centre in Lydney, it was a forgone conclusion that the Wilden Cup winners' plate would be coming back to Newent again but it was in the A teams hands.

Headteacher Jon Thomas said: "It is the first time that we've had two teams in the final. The B team is made up of year 5 players, and to make it to the final against older teams is an exceptional achievement."

The Year Six A team also lifted the trophy last year, as victors in a competition that annually attracts up to 40 schools from around the county.

The Wilden Cup is sponsored by the Forest of Dean accountancy firm that gave the trophy its name, and backed by the Forest of Dean District Council.
