Ledbury Red Cross group is in danger of disbanding after 60 years because of the sale of the St John Ambulance building.

The group has found itself in the same situation as the Elizabeth Baker Dance Studio, whose uncertain future was highlighted in the Reporter last week.

Both groups meet at the St John building in The Southend and have been told they may have to move out when the premises go on the market at the end of July.

The building is to be sold because a St John Ambulance group has not existed in town for four years.

Ledbury Red Cross first aider Fred Grace said: "We have served the town and local area for more than 60 years, and for the last 20 years we have been in this centre, which we shared with St John Ambulance until the group disbanded.

"We currently provide first aid cover for town events such as the carnival and poetry festival.

"We urgently need help to accommodate our first aid equipment, including a caravan which serves as a first aid station."

If it has to move, the group will also need space for its medical loans equipment, such as wheelchairs and commodes.

Mr Grace said: "These services compliment social service needs. Our present aim is to try to continue, but if offers to help with accommodation are not forthcoming, we may have to disband and the people of Ledbury will be the losers.

"Groups like ours need a base from which to operate and any offers of help will be appreciated."
