An auction of promises at The George Hotel on Friday raised £1,500 towards a £300,000 expansion of Picklenash Primary School in Newent.

The event was organised by the Parents and School Association, which has now raised over £10,500 in just one year, through events including children's discos, fayres and quiz nights.

Head Jon Thomas described their efforts as "stunning" and said Friday's fundraising would go towards the provision of a computer suite and new library for the school.

He said: "The new library will be three or four times bigger than the existing one."

Promises up for grabs at the auction included days out at Worcestershire and Warwickshire cricket grounds, bottles of wine, fitness sessions and even babysitting offers.

Work at the school is expected to be complete by the summer, with money coming from Gloucestershire County Council and school funds.

In 2001, the school was successful in a Basic Needs Bid for £160,000 of Government money, which was paid into the safekeeping of the county council.

As well as the installation of a new library and computer suite, a new classroom is being built and eight other classrooms are to be extended.
