WITH the biggest vice-president's pre-match lunch (over 130) ever organised at Ledbury it was always going to be a big day on Saturday.

LEDBURY 30pts, LEAMINGTON 8pts

The visitors elected to play against the elements in the first half and, being just two points behind Ledbury, the prospects were for a hard battle up front, especially with conditions wet and very heavy.

Ledbury took early control in the game with the pack doing well and several driven lineout moves inched Ledbury closer to the try line. With two phases of close play it was the backs who drew first blood by spreading the ball wide for wing man Olly Kaye to cross wide out and Barrett Price added the extras.

Ledbury were in complete control now and Leamington's only relief was coming from the boot of their fly half, who was struggling for distance with the breeze in his face. On several occasions the back three of Kaye, Peter Elkington and Mark Gould ran balls back with interest.

A penalty for offside on 28 minutes gave Barrett Price three more points and more or less straight from the restart saw probably the best try of the game. Quick ball round the side of a ruck saw Tara Barnett burst two tackles then slip the ball to Martin Williams. He went past another then found snipping no 9 Rob Collins to barge his way over between two defenders from eight yards for a 15-0 half time lead.

The visitors, who put the home line under siege for 10 minutes, started the second half brightly. With a stiff breeze now behind them they created several chances and managed to score a try and kick a penalty to put them right back into the game.

The Leamington forwards were visibly struggling to cope with a fast game played in heavy conditions and their fly half kicked more and more possession away but this was the beginning of their downfall.

With 20 minutes remaining Ledbury scored again through centre, Will Delamore, who nipped through to score under the posts (converted).

The flood gates opened shortly after and a penalty by Price and a score from the outstanding Isiah Young saw Ledbury home and dry.

Tomorrow (Saturday) more league action away at Kersley, kick off 2.30pm.
