Ledbury first XV went into the opening round of the Powergen Intermediate Cup with a relaxed and open approach.

KIDDERMINSTER CAROLIANS 25pts, LEDBURY 32pts

After losing their opening league fixture the previous week, the call was to return to the Corinthian spirit of the game and to try and just enjoy the rugby being played.

Kidderminster had opened their league account with a comfortable win and would doubtless provide a stern test for the Ross Road outfit.

The opening encounters were fraught with both sides playing an expansive game and players struggling with the heat and condition of the hard pitch.

Ledbury opened the scoring with a fine flowing move, which saw Jez Tanner scoot over. Barrett Price converted comfortably.

Within seconds of the restart though, the home side responded with a good move of their own, committing several Ledbury players to create a simple overlap.

The reliable boot of Price nudged Ledbury further ahead shortly afterwards before much pressure by Ledbury went unrewarded after the final pass was deemed forward.

With seconds to half-time, Kidderminster again showed their potential with more good interplay to put their winger in under the sticks, to leave the half-time score 17-10 in their favour.

After some positive words during the break, Ledbury were looking to be more assertive in the second period. This appeared to be short lived as Chris Kitching conceded another penalty and KC's took full advantage of the three points.

After a quiet start to the game, the welcome return of Olly Kaye to the side saw last year's leading try scorer fly in at the corner and with Price converting it brought Ledbury to within three points of the home side.

The next 20 minutes saw fly half Collins start to dominate the game. Several flowing moves and some sublime runs saw the diminutive Welshman create havoc for the away side. One such moment of magic was halted by a crude high tackle and the resulting penalty try was converted by Price to move Ledbury in front.

With new resolve Ledbury set about commanding the remainder of the game, with stout defending from all areas of the pitch.

The home side tried in vain to breach the Ledbury line, but found no way through.

With minutes to go Astley secured the win with first a try, followed by a drop goal to top off the day and send the travelling support home happy.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Ledbury face their first home league game against Evesham, with a 3pm kick-off. All support is welcomed.
