A FORTY-FOUR car towering inferno greeted fire fighters called to a county brokers yard.

A stack of cars at The Leasowes yard, Steen's Bridge, between Leominster and Bromyard, caught fire as workers used cutting equipment to separate cars on Thursday, April 10.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade spokesman, Alec Mackie, said: "All the cars were stacked up on top of one another and the fire spread rapidly.

"Fire fighters had to get water from a nearby stream to put it out. Luckily they managed to stop the fire spreading to a great pile of tyres."

Crews, including one from Leominster, two from Bromyard, one from Hereford with a water carrier and an off road vehicle were called to the yard at 5.30pm. The last crew left just before 9pm. Nobody was injured.
