A FAMILIAR face returned to an old haunt to officially open a newly restored school that has not heard the sound of 'playtime' for more than 15 years, writes SOPHIE BIGNALL.

Former head mistress, Gwen Brasier opened Norton House Nursery and Pre-preparatory School in Norton Canon 50 years after she taught children at the old school house.

The school, which has been a private home since 1988, is the dream of two teachers who saw the potential of the property when it came back on the market last year.

Sara Green and Victoria Turrell welcomed parents, future pupils, family, representatives from the church and the education authority as well as former pupils.

A bouncy castle, hot cross buns and an Easter egg hunt kept young guests amused and loud cheers went up as Mrs Brasier cut the ribbon and declared the school officially open.

The school has a long history dating back to the 18th century and now Sara and Victoria hope to offer the best modern facilities combined with the school's traditional charm.

Victoria said: "This school has been an important part of Norton Canon and the Weobley area for over 250 years. It would have been a terrible shame if that tradition had been lost forever.

"We hope to find the right balance between old and new whilst giving the children the chance to start school in the most idyllic of surroundings."
