A QUARTER of a century of commitment and devotion to the life of a school has been recognised in Colwall.

During Richard Southall's 25 years as head at the village primary school he has seen many changes - not least the fact that children he taught during the 1980s have grown into the parents of his current pupils.

Mr Southall came to Colwall in April 1978 at a time when there were 78 pupils on the roll - in 2003 there are 192.

According to his friends and colleagues, the key to Mr Southall's success and popularity is that he 'lives and breathes' the welfare of the children.

Deputy head David Mountain paid tribute to a 'most remarkable man who will go an extra mile for anybody'.

The school's chairman of governors, Rev. Carl Attwood added: "Our children are exceptionally lucky - Richard's energy and talents make him an inspirational teacher and head."
