Newent Town Council has described repair work to york stone paving in the Market Square as "appalling".

The work was carried out by Gloucestershire County Council because the paving was starting to break up.

But Newent mayor Coun Fred Passant said: "It is far from satisfactory. We need to get back to the county council and say that it is absolutely appalling if they think that is what a conservation area deserves."

The council is to seek clarification as to whether repair work carried out this week was only meant as a temporary measure to make the surface safe for pedestrians.
