Hereford MP Paul Keetch is to ask the leaders of the county's four political groups to back a private bill allowing the council to change the venue of the city livestock market.
The bill is a key part of the Edgar Street redevelopment, a £200 million project to boost the commercial life of the city by developing the current site of the livestock market.
With the private bill due to have its second reading in the House of Commons Mr Keetch feels that without the support of the new council leaders there is no point taking up House of Commons time with the bill.
Mr Keetch said: "The Edgar Street redevelopment is absolutely crucial to long term development of the county.
"It is incumbent on whoever leads the council to give me a steer on this. If they do not support it publicly it will be a waste of time and money."
l Herefordshire Councillors are expected to vote for a Conservative /Independent coalition to lead the council at tomorrow's annual meeting.
