Leominster firms rallied round to help a teenager construct an 'impregnable' new cricket pavilion at the Minster College after an old wooden hut was destroyed by vandals, writes PETE BLENCH.

The all-steel pavilion on a concrete base would cost about £4,000 'off the peg.' It was designed and built by Minster student Robert Field, 15, under the guidance of Mike Mifflin of Leominster Construction.

The company gave support and advice to Robert throughout his construction task. Other firms, Leominster Dry Lining and R J Barrington provided doors, windows and flashings.

A parent, Colin Shepherd, helped in the project by cladding Robert's steel frame in steel sheeting.

Sports teacher Alan Roberts said the college was grateful to everyone who played a part, particularly the young man at the heart of the initiative.

"Robert put so much work into it - the pavilion is fantastic," he said.

Strong backing from the local business community enabled the Minster College to say with confidence that it was offering its students 'the best sporting facilities in the county', said Mr Roberts.
