THIS year's Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts will run from August 21-26, involving a total of 28 events of which sixteen are concerts.

Plans include talks, children's events, forums, exhibitions, a poetry reading and a one-woman show, 'The Tale of Beatrix Potter'.

Musical themes for 2003 include a selection of American music, with major works by John Adams, Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, Gershwin and Joplin.

Several important anniversaries will be marked - the centenary of Sir Lennox Berkley and the birthdays of Robin Holloway and David Matthews. For traditionalists there will be works by J S Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Bruckner, Haydn, Ravel and Schubert.

The festival is to host Robin Holloway as Composer in Residence in 2003 - works to be performed will include the Ode for chamber orchestra, the Romanza for violin and orchestra, and his recent Sonata for solo cello.

Two new pieces of work have been commissioned - A Garland for Presteigne and Adrian Williams' 'Children of Baghdad'. In addition, the Joyful Company of Singers will give two world premieres by the American composer, Hilary Cavan. Other living composers receiving performances include Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Crabtree, Graham Fitkin, Libby Larsen, David Mitchum and Lloyd Moore.
