TWENTY-SEVEN crews from pubs, clubs and local businesses took part in Ross Rowing Clubs annual Fun Regatta on Sunday.

The teams representing the Eagle pub rowed to victory in the mixed and men's events.

"Sunday marked the first competitive event for most crews, many of which had never rowed before they started training for this regatta" said club captain Robin Fletcher.

"The crews were allocated an experienced rower from the club to act as cox and coach. They had between six to eight training sessions on the water before the big day - that amounted to only 14 hours of tuition.

"Even in this short time the technique demonstrated by the crews was really impressive and some tidy rowing was displayed on the day, especially by the winning crews."

A meeting is taking place today, June 5, at 7.30pm at Ross Rowing Club for any one who wants to continue rowing after pub and club regatta.

The Ross club recently competed at Monmouth, Worcester and Hereford Regattas, with a win at Hereford for Tim Bunting and Steve Fulford in the men's senior 2 coxless pairs.

Steve and Tim, who have only teamed up recently, saw off competition from Pengern in their first heat and beat a local crew from Hereford in the final by two lengths.

Robin Fletcher and Gary Kinsella had comfortable wins in their two heats but unfortunately narrowly missed a win against Shakespeare in the final of the men's senior 3 double sculls.
