In response to requests from a number of local cinema-goers, The Courtyard is in the process of setting up a Film Club.

Last month, the art centre held an open forum to gauge the interest of the wider public in such an initiative.

More than 30 people attended and were asked, among other things, what kind of films they would like to see. The first season of Film Clubs will reflect this grass-roots response and the venue will release details in due course.

The views expressed at the forum were vociferous enough to convince staff at The Courtyard that a film club would be well-supported and could play an important part in the general film programme at the venue.

Underground

The next Film Club 'taster' is on Monday, June 9 at 7.15pm. Programme notes will be available and the screening will be preceded by a short introduction.

The films showing will be Freaks (12) and The Devil Doll (PG), both directed by Tod Browning.

The first, made in 1932 and just 64 minutes long stars Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams and Olga Baclanova. Real sideshow stars populate a macabre world of outcasts and oddballs in this terrifying fable of love, betrayal and retribution. Banned in Britain until 1963, Browning's underground classic is one of the most controversial and bizarre films ever made.

The Devil Doll (PG/79 mins), made in 1936, stars Lionel Barrymore and Frank Lawton. A demented brew of mad scientists, mind control, shrinking people and Lionel Barrymore in drag, this baroque tale of twisted vengeance contains some admirable special effects for the era as well as some memorable set pieces.
