ANDY Thomas was the inaugural winner of the Mike Lane Trophy at Ross-on-Wye, given by the club in their centenary year to perpetuate the memory a former club champion.

The 36-hole scratch event was closely contested with Thomas carding a best-of-the-day second round 74 to clinch the title with 156 (82, 74).

Alex Catchpole took the runners- up spot with 158 (82, 76) to beat first-round leader Brian Macnamara, 158 (81, 77) on a card countback.

Derrick Richards fired a splendid 82-18-64 to win the Ross Traders Cup. The event was started in 1911 as an open and is now a closed 18-hole medal.

Richards held off the challenge of Stuart Tier, 78-12-66, with Chris Tweedale, 86-18-68, Keith Southern, 79-10-69 and Mike Rothwell, 78-9-69, taking the minor places.

The C team suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 3-2 at Monmouth.

The seniors unbeaten run came to a gallant end with a 4-3 defeat at a wet and windy Stinchcombe.

n Kington's Darren Richards marked his national championship debut with a fine performance to finish seventh with a 72-hole total of 292 (76, 69, 73, 74) in the Wales Youths Open Championship at Northop Country Park.

The former Shropshire and Herefordshire junior captain, who claimed the prestigious Shropshire Open title last year, is making a determined assault on the Welsh Amateur Order of Merit events and will this week contest the Aber Conwy Trophy.

Wyndham Evans held off fierce competition at Kington to claim the Kildare Cup and EGU medal with a blistering 74-14-60.
