DAVID Park produced a sparkling final round of 69 in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor to move up the field and finish on a three-under par total of 285 (70, 72, 74, 69) for a share of 41st place for £8,000, writes Glyn Wictome.

Although disappointed that he did not get into contention, Park, who promotes the Wales Open at European Tour events, was happy with his play from tee to green.

"My long game is very sound but I failed to make enough putts," said the Herefordshire golfer.

Having dropped a couple of shots on the greens in the closing holes of the first round, he continued to miss opportunities and slipped down the field with a level par second round.

In the third round, generally regarded as 'moving day' by the professionals, he again failed to convert a succession of birdie chances, but rediscovered his touch with an excellent final round.

After the Wales Open he lies 38th in the Volvo European Order of Merit with total earnings for the season of £146,000.

This week he hopes to improve that total and move up the table when he tees up in the British Masters at the Marriot Forest of Arden, Warwickshire.
