A POWERFUL all-round display led Monmouth to an emphatic 194-run home win over Burghill & Tillington in the Flint & Cook Marches League Division 1.

The Welsh club recovered from 88-4 against last season's Division 2 champions to post a formidable 256-8 at the Sports Ground.

Paul Swingwood made a patient 50 and man-of-the-match Charlie Bye struck a breezy 48 to resurrect Monmouth's innings, while Steve De-Souza bagged 3-58.

Without their two most influential batsmen, the Herefordshire club were immediately in trouble against Bye (4-25) and Jonathan Roberts (2-9). Spinner Aled Jones then snapped up 3-3 to skittle out the visitors for 62 in the 29th over.

Leominster maintained their impressive start to the campaign with a comprehensive six-wicket win over Wormelow at Bridge Street.

The prolific Ian Herbert led the way for Wormelow, striking an unbeaten 108 not out from 120 balls, and he was influential in guiding the visitors to 210-4.

Herbert remained composed throughout his innings, collecting 16 boundaries, and he was given support by opener Jamie Langford (31) and Mick Merrick (29).

Leominster's Dave Barrington and Kevin Howells (41) laid the foundations of the home side's reply with an opening stand of 91.

Once Howells departed, in-form Barrington started to dominate and struck a match-winning unbeaten 99, including 16 fours and a six, which swept high-flying Leominster home with 4.4 overs to spare.

Talgarth continued their promising start to the season with a convincing seven-wicket home victory over Mid Wales rivals Llandrindod Wells.

Talgarth restricted the visitors to 158-9 and then Gethin Evans (70) helped to guide home last season's runners-up in the 43rd over.

Reigning champions Goodrich chalked up a five-wicket away win over local rivals Ross in keenly contested derby.

Alan Marfell top scored with 43 for home club Ross who, boosted by 28 wides, reached 180-9. A 95-run second-wicket stand between Tony Beddard (67 not out) and Andy Brown (63) then put Goodrich on course for victory and the visitors reached their target in the 42nd over.

Former champions Canon Frome registered a straightforward 95-run away victory over winless Crickhowell.

A second-wicket partnership of 101 between Ned Mawby (51) and captain Andy Rogers (47) laid the bedrock of Canon Frome's 217-9, while Andrew Duddell (36) and Harry Orgee (30) also chipped in.

Although Tim Price made an unbeaten 34 for the home side, Neil Andrews (4-23), Dan Watkins (2-20), Nick Panniers (2-29) and Rogers (2-40) skittled out Crickhowell for 122 in 25 overs.

Meanwhile, Monmouth opener Rob Prewett blasted 28 fours in a club record 164 not out and helped the Welsh side beat lower-graded Woolhope by 131 runs in the first round of the Advantage Business Supplies Knockout Cup.
