A BLISTERING unbeaten 229 from Andrew Mawdsley swept reigning champions St Martin's to a crushing 181-run home victory over Ewyas Harold in the Hereford Times Hereford and District League Division 1.

The hard-hitting Mawdsley blasted 23 sixes and 16 fours at Widemarsh Common and his sparkling double century included 34 runs in an over bowled by Harold veteran Les Dallow.

Mawdsley also shared a league record partnership of 285 for the second wicket with Mark Rone, who made 72 in St Martin's daunting 361-2.

The run-spree was marred, however, by a serious injury to Harold's Derek Manning who was taken to hospital after being struck in the eye as he attempted to catch a skier from Mawdsley.

Although Harold opener Alan Davies made 82 in reply, Rone (3-15), Gerald Rock (3-41) and Julian Morris (2-52) were influential in bowling out the villagers for 180.

P Williams scored a century in Weobley's convincing 88-run away win over Bishop's Frome in a high-scoring match.

Williams finished on 139 and was backed up by D Hamer (37) and P Wall (37) in propelling Weobley to a commanding 302, while P Bottomley claimed 3-53.

M Pearson (66) and D Turner (38) led Bishop's Frome's response but J Hall (3-34), Williams (2-14) and D Hamer (2-28) got down to work to dismiss the home side for 214.

Bosbury thrashed Almeley by 10 wickets after the home club had won the toss and chosen to bat first.

The decision backfired because only R Duggan (16) and C Baker (16) reached double figures in Almeley's meagre 51, with D Cook snapping up 5-4 and J Owen, 3-25.

Bosbury made light work of reaching their target with G Fletcher (21 not out) and M Carless (21 not out) taking the visitors home.

In the other match in the section, Lads Club posted 208-7 in a 35-run away victory over Presteigne.

In Division 2, 12-year-old Ben George snapped up 5-27, including four wickets in four balls, to inspire Kington 4th to a thrilling two-run away win over Hay 2nd.

Earlier, Hay's 15-year-old James Brerton had shone with the ball, taking 7-19 in Kington's 126.
